Active Research Trials
At FIS we practice medicine at a tertiary care academic institution that allows us to conduct clinical research. Our Interventional Radiologists serve as adjunct faculty at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, and they currently have multiple open clinical trials enrolling patients at TGH.
OPEN CLINICAL TRIALS
Dr. Shaikh – PROTECT Registry (for thyroid embolization):
A registry that follows patients who have thyroid artery embolization, a minimally invasive alternative to surgery for enlarged thyroid glands or benign nodules. Tiny particles are used to reduce blood flow to the thyroid so it shrinks over time. The registry tracks safety, symptom improvement, and long-term results.
Dr. Heithaus – STRIKE PE (for pulmonary embolism):
This study looks at how well a minimally invasive catheter procedure removes blood clots from the lungs. Instead of relying only on blood-thinning medication, the clot is physically removed through a small tube placed in a vein, with the goal of helping patients recover faster and breathe easier.
Dr. Hoots – PE-TRACT (for pulmonary embolism):
A national study comparing two treatments for moderate-risk lung clots. One group receives standard blood thinners alone; the other receives blood thinners plus a catheter-based procedure that helps break up or remove the clot. The study is measuring how patients feel and function in the months after treatment.
Dr. Hoots – Dexterity (for DVT):
This trial is studying a catheter-based device used to remove blood clots from the deep veins of the leg (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT). The goal is to clear the clot quickly to reduce leg pain and swelling and lower the chance of long-term problems like post-thrombotic syndrome.
Have questions?
Our team works closely with the Tampa General Hospital department of research. If you are a patient in a research trial, some of your follow-up appointments may be at the FIS office and some may be at the TGH research office. If you have any questions, please call the research coordinator for the study you are participating in.
